Dawson oddities

Bagpipes and kilts. We caught the opening ceremony of the Top of the World Highland Games. They have a pool to see who picks the day and time of Spring ice breakup on the Yukon. They have an Easter egg fight (not hunt).

Whitehorse

We checked out the SS Klondike, a sternwheeler that ferried goods and souls in and out the Yukon River during the gold rush days.   There are log cabin high rises in town.   They have food trucks, those things are everywhere.  We had Greek fries with tzatziki.  Delicious.

Like teenage kids

Goofing off in the warm sun. The thermals must have been perfect. A dozen or so juvenile Bald Eagles dive and glide and swoop at one another and with one another. It is alternately a finely choreographed ballet and a wild cat fight with talons extended. I hope they had as much fun flying as I had watching.

Campground not RV Park

We are trying out the Yukon Government Campgrounds.  They are light on the amenities but there are lots of trees, sites are pretty level, and pit toilets are clean.  Best thing, firewood comes with the site.  We have had two nights in a row of roaring campfires with S’mores one night and blueberry campfire iron pies the next.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

Night 1: camp was very quiet and we listened to the changing bird calls as the sky grew darker…never really dark mind you.  It was still light enough to read when we went to bed at 11PM.

Night 2:  Skeeters were a bit more persistent and we were lucky enough to have a neighbor who felt compelled to entertain us with his eclectic taste in music.  Of the two types of entertainment I definitely enjoyed the natural ones more!   Still, it was a lively evening.

We are in the Yukon now.

The mountains are more rolling and greener.  We just arrived at Watson Lake and are hanging out by the camp fire.  We checked out the sign forest.  It is amazing the number of places represented.   We plan to explore a bit more tomorrow.

Wood Bison

Hey look.  There are half a dozen just across the highway from camp.  They look a lot like American Bison.  Maybe a little bigger and a bigger hump on their back.  They certainly act the same.  Groups of two or three or lone bulls are hanging around the roadside munching on grass and looking grumpy.  We spotted quite a few today.  The black bears were out too.  Else it was a pretty quiet drive.

Liard River Hot Springs

Sooooo nice.  A natural hot spring bubbles up and cascades across tuft terraces into a fern lined pool.  We had to give it a try as soon as we arrived and it felt pretty nice in mid afternoon.  The best though was the early morning soak today.  The air was around 47.  Steam rose all around us.  I could get used to this.  It must be an amazing experience in the winter when all is snow covered and the steam surely hangs even thicker.Hot springs Comp_3946

At the end of the pool where the spring enters the water is around 110F.  It cools to around 106 toward the other end as it mixes with other cool water springs and cools to the air.  One spectacular hot tub.
