Adorable calves and oober protective mamas. We got a good look at one of the Bison herds that live in the park. I think of them as out-west creatures but they roamed these lands by the thousands too. It was cool to see them here.

The Homeplace at Land Between the Lakes
It is a glimpse into life in the 1850s. I tried out a loom…it would take me a VERY long time to make a rag rug. Kent and I made a bit of sawdust with a two man saw.
“Flowers on the Bed”. What a perfect name for the annual quilt show this weekend. Antique pieces are carefully displayed in the theatre. Fantastic works of art cover beds and drape across every piece of furniture and porch rail in the log homes. It is amazing handwork; each piece has its own wonderful story. It makes me wonder a bit what people a hundred years from now with cherish from this time?! What will tell our story?
Did you know?
Lots of cargo is moved by barge along the Tennessee River, through Kentucky lake, and its locks into the Ohio then the Mississippi. Far from traffic and train tracks we were surprised to hear the rumble of engines in camp. Surprise, tug boats.
A small town parade..in the cool rain
Little Miss of everything. I don’t believe that I have ever before seen so many Queens and their courts on any one day. We must be in pageant country.
The Sheriff’s canine team; five dogs, no two alike. The most fun was the bloodhound. I had a flash back to ole Roscoe and Flash but this four legged fellow was anything but lazy. He was continuously on the hunt for some scent to follow…That made for somewhat odd behavior on a parade route. They are just a fun dog to watch.
A Budweiser Clydesdale hitch
Eight beautiful Clydesdales decked out in black leather and shining silver pulled the spit and polish red wagon on the parade route.
Butch the Dalmatian rode proudly atop the wagon surveying all that passed before him. We got to see the hitch as they not-so-patiently awaited the start of the parade and the horses were out for all to see in the livestock barn at the fairgrounds.
Floats representing Churches, businesses, clubs and even individual families; County-wideHigh school, Middle school and local college bands and the requisite fire trucks, police cars and ambulances all with plenty of siren sounding and horn blowing. The only thing missing were the Shriners.
A land and sea battle. Here?
So far inland I had thought of the Civil War in this area as a foot and cavalry war, not entirely. Union Generals led iron clad stern wheelers up the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers to attack Rebel forts that defended Confederate transportation and supply routes. The heavily armed ships didn’t pull off quite the rout that the Federals hoped but it gave Lincoln the victory he so greatly needed to bolster his political position at the time. The Fort Donelson National Battlefield tells the story of these battles.
Amazingly, we have found yet another battle that is called “the turning point” of the war. The first sign that the Union could prevail and the beginning of the end for the Confederate States of America. It certainly seems that it “depends on who you ask” when it comes to most significant battles.
Two foxes today
One in the campground and the other along the road as we were out driving. The cool damp weather isn’t good for much else but it seems to have brought them out for us to see.
Celebration March 2, 2013
Mike and Tracy are married. The handsome groom (of course). The beautiful bride. An ideal setting in the snow covered mountains. A perfect, romantic ceremony. A fun reception that combined great food, traditional toasts and dances, and a not-so-traditional cookie dunking. There was plenty of music and dancing. There were even a few snow flakes to add to the mood. It was wonderful.
Rehearsal night was a great time too. The food at the BBQ was great and constant hum of joyful voices was a perfect start for the weekend. Mike got to show off his awesome fire building skills at the bonfire. My toes were freezing by the time we wrapped up, it was definitely a Mike moment that I wouldn’t have missed for the world.
Time to bake the cookies

A not-so-typical Holiday Season
Everybody got together in Pa again this year with lots of good food, our share of holiday libations, and time to catch up on lives that are speeding by. We managed to pack in all the essential Holiday goings on. Then it was all about our niece Molly. The beautiful bride (and dashing groom) tied the knot at a lovely news years eve ceremony followed by a fun party, capped off with fireworks. It certainly seemed to me that it was a great start for what promises to be a long and joyous union.
