BWCA here we come

Air travel into Thunder Bay, Ontario from NYC via Portland, OR is not always smooth.  Just ask Mike and Tracy.  They spent around 12 hours in airports or in the air but make it safe and sound albeit pretty tired.  We pick up a tasty lunch at The Pita Pit then they snooze most of the way to camp at Sleeping Giant. Kent grilled burgers and portabellas for dinner followed by Mike’s first of several camp fires.  We all turn in for a good nights sleep before the real adventure begins tomorrow.

Catching up with family and friends

Much of June has been spent visiting aunts and uncles and cousins and classmates. There have been picnics and dinners out, along with a local concert on the river front and time to just hang out and catch up.

For Kent, the visit included a Safari at “The Wilds” in Cumberland Ohio where they

Sichuan Takin

display and house for breeding programs a number of endangered and threatened species.  A few familiar critters, like camels, bison and rhinos are in the company of lots of not-so-familiar ones from Africa and Asia.

Oh yeah, Kent finished up a bunch of honey-do projects around the “house” too.

Happy 85th Birthday, Mom

We celebrated with delicious Mexican and an absolutely amazing creamy, caramel, toffee, nut cheese cake baked by our very own baker, Carol. The consensus was that we have never tasted better!

We celebrated Mother’s Day too then hung out for a couple weeks just visiting and puttering around. It is great to catch up with everybody.

Company

Tammy drove in from Louisville to visit for a bit.  It is still far from beach weather but we will make it work.  We check out a couple trails and even venture out on the beach…all in about 45 minutes spurts with warming time in between.

Fun in central Florida

The folks in Plant City know strawberries!  The shortcake is to die for.  We bring a flat home and enjoy it for days.

The “singing tower” carillon at Bok Tower Gardens.  It is a grand instrument in a beautiful tower built in the center of a magnificent Olmsted designed garden.  A Mediterranean Revival mansion, Pinewood Estate is spectacular.  It is the winter home built in the 1930s by Austin Buck, an executive at Bethlehem Steel.  I could spend a few months here, as long as it comes with its full complement of staff.

Rural King. It is a fun stop.  They have just about everything from food to clothing to farm implements.  Unlike Big R or Tractor Supply, they even have baby chicks, ducklings and bunnies.

Vero Beach.  Nice!  Beautiful blue against a soft white sand beach.  Relaxing.

Time for me to head home too

Long before daylight Bob rolls up and we head off to BWI. The drive is uneventful.  BWI security goes smoothly.  The flight is smooth and on time. Kent fetches me up in Miami and before long I am back in Lake Wales.  I love the Holidays and it always feels good to get back home.

Hanging out with Mom

Roast a turkey, brown the bones, and cook up some yummy turkey corn soup. Heat up that stove top Belgian waffle iron and break out the blueberries for some perfect topping.  Lime pie; can’t skip that.  We venture out to shop a bit.  Oh yeah, then there are all the eye drops.  It has been a great couple weeks.
