If I only knew whose name I will have for Christmas 2011

We stopped at this rambling gift ad craft shop in the quiet little town of Gila Bend. He had all manner of pottery, wall décor and “set around” stuff with a southwestern theme. The five foot tall barbed wire Saguaro cactus was probably the best. The potted cactus gardens were cool too as were the many versions of “day of the dead” skeletons in a great range of attire. All fun stuff….whomever my 2011 name shall be, you sure missed out!

Winding down from the Holidays

It is Amtrak back to PA then a few days of down time to unwind from all the holiday festivities. We will spend a little of that time planning out the next 6 months of travel. I had thought I would have more of that done by now but ….. to busy visiting. Seems that I am pretty much in the moment nowadays.

A touch of urban culture….great fun

We took in ballet at the Nutcracker in Houston with Brian and Robin. It is a wonderful Holiday classic. As always, I loved watching and listening to the orchestra and it is amazing how so complete a story can be told through dance with no dialog. Then, we saw 39 Steps in New York. It is based on the Hitchcock story and is absolutely hilarious. Plenty of “in your face” physical humor and “catch you off guard” dialog.

Trip to Houston for the Revere Middle School Concert

Welcome to the big city, I had forgotten how much I hate traffic jams. And then there was the part where Brian is addressed as Mr. Sayre, makes me feel old. The concert was very good and well attended, nearly every seat was filled. A little late getting back to the park and they had locked the gate. Thankfully the gate combination worked and I had remembered a flashlight so I did not have to walk the last mile to camp.

Early Happy Birthday Brian

A quick stop in Houston. We are not due here till December but Brian had a Civic Orchestra Concert and I had never heard that group. Plus, he will be 30 years old on the 26th so we took a side trip into town for a quick visit. We managed to sneak into the concert and avoid detection during intermission. We showed our face at the end. Robin was taken a little aback, one doesn’t normally think of inlaws from 1000 miles away as drop in visitors but she recovered nicely and accepted it like a real trooper. We ate some Mexican then they got the grand tour of the motor home and had some birthday cake. Overall, it nice visit. Good music. Good company

Seems like all we did was eat today!

Wursts (brat, knock and smoked) and Schnitzel (Jaeger) with kraut, red cabbage and German potato salad then bread pudding for dessert. I thought of the beer drinkers I know as they had several German beers on tap. I fleetingly thought of trying one on their behalf but figured they wouldn’t get the same joy out of my talking about it. I don’t think I would have had room for it anyway.

Birthday with the bats!

Actually, I was somewhat releaved to hear that the Mexican free-tailed bats that live in Carlsbad Caverns all summer (10s of thousands of them) have already left for warmer places for the winter. In the summer they have bat viewing every night. There is an amphitheatre at the natural entrance just for that event. Cool I am sure but a little creepy.

We went in the natural entrance today. A long serpentine trail that drops about 800 ft pretty quickly. Kent got lots of pictures but you don’t get the full affect without that lingering scent of bat guano…obviously when that may go in and out everyday using the same tunnel people do, there is some lingering evidence…..that aside, it was a fun hike and helped put the scale of these caverns into some perspective. The rooms are huge and formations can be from the miniscule to the mammoth. They are pretty minimalist with lighting so it was twilight-like much of the time. A little darker off and on today as they were having problems with the lighting and it went off several times – unplanned it seems – but they do have emergency lights around….a little un nerving but not really scary.

On the guided tour, they turned all the lights off for a bit just to get the real feel for the cave. Pitch dark of course and without sight you really notice the other sensations like the dampness of the air and cool air currents. Just confirmed what I already knew, fun to visit but I would be a terrible real live spelunker.

So, Carlsbad Caverns National park is another “don’t miss”. For those braver than I, there are several wild cave tours that are probably amazing. They involve squeezing through tight places, crawling through mud, and hanging with bats and spiders and other dark world critters so…not for me…but cool for those into such things.

Great Bday for me. Kent did all the cooking and we spent the day in a really unique and fun place. I even had ice cream! What more could a gal want?
