Food truck Friday

Phoenix has a bit of a food truck scene.0418141252  About 10 trucks gathered at the central market.  We had to check it out.  Burgers and dogs were represented along with lots of more adventuresome ethnic foods. The pulled pork with jerk sauce was great and the jalapeño mac and cheese even better.  Kent’s Inca chicken with Aji sauce was the most amazing.  The pie truck had key lime, had to try it.  The fry bread was irresistible too.  They had some healthy choices but we skipped those!  Yummy and fun.

An hour at the mall

No, it wasn’t shopping that0416141732 took 0416141731us to the mall.  It was a sidewalk chalk art festival.  There was some beautiful work.  My favorite was of local wildlife: coyote, cactus wren, a desert cottontail, and a quail.  The Phoenix was pretty cool too.

Garbanzo, a Mediterranean food place, beckoned us in for dinner.  Kent tried a classic gyro and I tried falafel on a pita with all its sauces and stuff.  Not sure how authentic it was but it was tasty.  If the chain is around you, try it.

A day in the desert

Aqua Fria National Monument….our new focus got its first back-road experience.  It was dusty, wash boarded, washed out, and rock pocked.  There was even a creek fording.  No problem.

Brilliant fuchsia blossomsBlloming Catus_1324 on hedgehog cactus dot the rugged hillsides.  The vivid green of towering cottonwood trees follows Snake Comp_1334the contour of hidden washes.  A pretty impressive snake lies sunning on the road.  The remnants of stacked stone walls on a perfect mesa are all that tell the story of the ancients who used to call this place home.

A little help?

With our helpful & deducated Spring Breakers from Indiana University we’re removing a structurally unsound saltwater boardwalk.  The boardwalk runs across a bog near the other end of the publically accessible portion of the refuge.  Transporting the debris for disposal is a challenge.  We were moving along quite well utilizing the medium John Deere 4-wheel drive tractor and a trailer.  Today we started the portion closest to the water (elevation 1-2 feet).  Balancing the number of trips across the bog with the quantity of each load is a running challenge.   Today we exceeded the load bearing capacity of the swamp. It is good to have REAL toys!Stuck Comp_0848

The Fulton TX oyster festival

I know.  Why would someone who dislikes oysters go to such a thing?  Well, we/I was having Festival withdrawal and it just sounded like fun.  This little town must at least quadruple in size during this Volunteer Fire Department fund raiser.  We skipped the main event, the raw oyster eating contests.  The winning guy ate 329 in 5 minutes.  Blech.

We joined the throngs lining the main street for the parade.  It was another small town classic, dozens of fire trucks, the requisite Shriners and politicians, followed by the Oyster King, Queen, princes, little miss oyster, tiny tot oyster and on and on.  I don’t know where they got all those crowns.

Oysterfest comp_0695In the food tent they had a whole row of guys shucking Oysters Comp_0696shucking as fast as they could go just to keep up with the long line of folks anxious to slide down a dozen or so.  Not I (or Kent).  We stuck to the cooked stuff: some wonderful fried Texas coast oysters, and shrimp.

Some fair sounding local bands filled the huge striped tent with waves of country music.  The place was a-jumping.

The second tent was filled with rows of craft booths.  I couldn’t resist looking but did manage not to actually buy anything.

I had a funnel cake.  Overall, the festival experience was quite satisfying.

Yikes

The wild cry of a pissed-off bobcat Bobcat Cropped_0484was a bit un-nerving even in daylight.  The beautifully marked sleek coated cat strode across the road just in front of us like he owned the place.  His short curled tail was tipped with bright white.  He was in no hurry and seemed unconcerned with us humans standing statue-still wanting to make the encounter last as long as possible.  He disappeared into the thicket of live oaks.  Encounter over, we thought.  Surprise.   A loud, wild cry leapt out of the thicket.  A half dozen paired howls/screams left no doubt that we had seen a wild animal that many a creature had reason to fear.  I was glad it was daylight and that we spend the night inside solid walls.
