I 8 runs pretty near the border for a while. There have been quite a few white and green border patrol vehicles mixed in traffic and along the sides of the road up in the hills. The California produce inspection folks were more thorough though. They actually came into the motorhome and checked out the labels of the fruit (gala apples for us) in the frig. The border police so far have just asked where we are heading and sent us on our way. We must look harmless enough.

If I only knew whose name I will have for Christmas 2011
We stopped at this rambling gift ad craft shop in the quiet little town of Gila Bend. He had all manner of pottery, wall décor and “set around” stuff with a southwestern theme. The five foot tall barbed wire Saguaro cactus was probably the best. The potted cactus gardens were cool too as were the many versions of “day of the dead” skeletons in a great range of attire. All fun stuff….whomever my 2011 name shall be, you sure missed out!
Dang it…2 more fieldmice.
I heard them again all night. Got the last two of them, we think. They are cute but I just can’t deal with them in the house. I dreamed about the snakes following them in…..really a cool thought! Anyway, problem solved at least for now.
Border issues screw with our plans a bit
We are skipping Organ Pipe national Park and the LTVAs on BLM property along the border. Both the BLM guys and the Park Service say that the enforcement in the urban areas is pushing illegal activity out into the open land like parks, wilderness areas, and reservations. They are even closing the campgrounds periodically. So, we are staying a little north this pass and heading straight to San Diego.
Kinda of irritating to have others mess with what we want to de but not worth the risk. Hope we can all get this figued out one day.
In the mean time, San Diego should be fun.

Phoenix – County Park
We moved on to Pleasant Lake County Park just north of town. 10,000 acre lake in the desert. It does however have a little green since they have had rain the last 2 weekends. There are wild burros roaming the park. Took a day trip to the Agua Fria River National Wilderness area. About a mile hike into a beautiful canyon where the Agua Fria River runs through and over the boulders. Nice quiet relaxing place for lunch with the babbling water and abundant sunshine. Overnight we picked up some un-documented guests in the motorhome. Seems Henry, of Rocky Mountain National Park fame, has Phoenix relatives. We are talking field mouse Henry. Henry’s Phoenix relatives wandered into the Tootsie Pops. Bad move!
Race Day
Overnight we had rain(in Phoenix!) and winds(38 mph) but the day was cool and clear. It was in the low 50’s at racetime but thankfully our seats were in the sun so we were warm enough. The race had a 10 minute red flag while they cleaned up a from a multicar accident but then ended with a Jeff Gordon victory. He broke his car during his victory celebration and had to be pushed to victory lane by a tow truck. How embarrassing! Talk about showmanship. The track is being rebuilt/resurfaced prior to the November race, so they brought out a really big backhoe and started tearing up the track while we were still in the stands. FYI, if you want, you can buy a piece of the old track.
Speed Cantina
Free live entertainment every evening for the campers. Friday night was Hollywood Yates, a country band that turned down a request for “Freebird” from the crowd by saying they were not drunk enough “yet”. We didn’t stay long enough to hear “Freebird”.
Hey Mom, there are rainbows!
We have the prism hanging in the back window and the sun just came up enough to fill the motorhome with rainbows. Happens each day if we are parked at the right angle. Thinking of you!
