I can see clearly now

Today was an equipment maintenance day. Safelite helped by installing clean new windshields in both the motorhome and the car.  Both were casualties of the Cassiar Hwy in BC during our travels from Alaska.  The “Acoustic Screen” glass in the car raised the replacement cost above that of the Motorhome?  And, the motorhome got another helping of fresh new oil.  Tomorrow we move toward Yosemite.

The lesser developed shores

Rugged boulders underfoot, magnificent pines towering over us, and the broad blue waters of Lake Tahoe stretching out in front of us; beautiful.Tahoe Overlook web_8479

Glitzy Casinos, massive mansions and clusters of vacation homes line much of the shore of Lake Tahoe.  There are shops and restaurants and beaches but my favorite sections are those that have been spared development as part of a handful of State Parks and as National Forest.

A beautiful morning for strolling

The arboretum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is a bit different scale than most I have been to.  We are talking entire groves: Oak, Maple, and conifers plus sections showcasing desert plant life.

No new birds but I watched a hawk family as mom and dad coached their fledgling in basic flight techniques. He seemed to be getting the hang of it.

Just outside the window

A covey of California Quail is scratching out breakfast in the gravel and sandburs not 5 feet from me. They jostle for the best foraging space and murmur at each other continuously.  Once in a while the high pitched alarm call goes out, “chi-ca-go”.  They are great fun to watch.

I hope they eat every seed!  Those burs are annoying

Birds along the Great Salt Lake

It is a matter of numbers and splendid breeding plumage rather than new sightings.  American Avocets,Avocet Comp_2289 Black Necked Stilts, and Cinnamon Teals in their Sunday best explore the many ponds and channels.  The breeze stirs wispy neck and head feathers of snowy egrets. Pheasant plumage is so vivid that it almost looks painted on.Pheasant Comp_2273

As the sun slides lower in the sky over the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, bugs first dot then cover the car windows.  Mosquitoes?  They sure look like mosquitoes!  Have no fear though, according to a conveniently placed refuge signboard they are actually midges…mosquito-like but no nasty biting proboscises.  We are not taking any chances.  Windows are staying up.
